Recruiting a bevy of oddball-celebrity sidemen and invitee vocalists -- sampled or otherwise -- slightly bleary-eyed the backbone of the grouping, only David Barker and Simon Leonard recorded several albums of elysian ambient-techno as Fortran 5. Indebted to such culprits of British whimsy as Syd Barrett and Monty Python, the couplet commonly recorded with samplers blazing, the devilish solution of which included outre pop collisions like Donna Summer and the Pretenders or the Champs' "Tequila" and thrash-metal. With roots in the Mute Records artists I Start Counting, the match debuted with 1990's "Crazy Earth," a woolgathering acid-house raceway counting Barrett among its sample victims. Several singles followed during 1990-91, including "Mettle on the Line" with (live) vocals by Miranda Sex Garden.

The debut Fortran 5 LP was Blues, released in 1991; it included contributions from Can's Holger Hiller, Orb's Kris Weston (aka Thrash) and far-famed DJ Colin Faver. The weirdest collaboration, nevertheless, was a compensate of Syd Barrett's "Motorcycle," with vocals obtained by posthumously sampling assorted lines from legendary comedian and Carry On film star, Sid James -- the group was perchance saved from a court sheath since producer on the session was Sid James' son Steve. Following the LP were several high profile singles, including "Look to the Future" (with live vocals by Sly Stone alumnus Larry Graham) and "Irani Blues" (with Neil Arthur of Blancmange).

The sampling shenanigans continued on Fortran 5's second full-length, Forged Head Park. The "Sid Sings Syd" theme was resurrected, with notable British actor Derek Nimmo unwittingly loaning his vocals to a compensate of Derek & the Dominos' "Layla," spell Barker and Leonard besides called upon John Barry and media coverage of the Gulf War to enhance their compositions. The couplet featured no collaborators and few samples on their one-third, the 1995 concept album Aguacate Suite. Fortran 5 as well remixed Erasure, Inspiral Carpets, Miranda Sex Garden and Laibach.

Alicia Keys' troubled time leads to big success

By Iain Blair

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - R&B singer Alicia Keys is enjoying
a successful worldwide tour, a chart-topping album and will act
in an upcoming movie, but it might not have happened, she said,
were it not for a near breakdown two years ago.

Keys, whose current hits include "No One," is in the middle
of her "As I Am" tour. The new "As I Am" album debuted on
record charts at No. 1 and has sold over 3 million copies.

In October, she makes her film debut in "The Secret Life of
Bees," starring Queen Latifah and Jennifer Hudson. Based on the
best-selling novel of the same name, the movie is co-produced
by Will Smith and backed by indie powerhouse Fox Searchlight.

While Keys seems to lead a charmed life and has the sort of
career that most other 26-year-olds could barely imagine, it
hasn't always been so rosy.

Two years ago, the singer went through a troubled period
that nearly derailed her life and career. A workaholic
lifestyle and the death of a close relative from cancer pushed
her "very close" to the breaking point, she admits.

Instead of having a public meltdown, Keys faced her demons
in private.

"I knew I needed time away, so I went to Egypt for a month
-- on my own, which gave it a whole different perspective," she
told Reuters in a recent interview.

"It allowed me to see things I'd never seen before -- all
the temples on the Nile, the Pyramids, the history. It was so
rich and beautiful and strong, and it inspired me so much, and
renewed me."

A ferociously confrontational van performing artist noted for her bawling, four-octave vocal range, Diamanda Galas was born and elevated in San Diego, California. The daughter of Greek Orthodox parents, her singing was roundly discouraged, although her prowess as a classical piano player was nurtured; finally, her strict upbringing resulted in a reckless, drug-fueled early days prior to her ingress into the University of California's music and visual liberal arts syllabus.

Galas made her playing debut in 1979 at France's Festival d'Avignon, which light-emitting diode to an invitation to accept the lead role in composer Vinko Globokar's politically-charged opera Un Jour Comme un Autre. In subsequent solo performance-art pieces like Wild Women With Steak Knives and Tragouthia apo to Aima Exon Fonos, Galas further honed her unequalled, smashing vocal style, elysian by the Schrei ("scream") opera house of German expressionism (a bod employing a system of four microphones and a series of echoes and delays).

Galas made her recorded debut in 1982 with The Litanies of Satan, a provocative put to work comprised of a outspoken adjustment of a verse form by Charles Baudelaire. After the prison-themed performance piece Panoptikon (documented on a self-titled 1984 release), she began development a trilogy of albums known collectively as The Masque of the Red Death; released independently betwixt 1986 and 1988 as The Divine Punishment, Saint of the Pit and You Must Be Certain of the Devil, the three records catalogued Galas' litany against the AIDS epidemic, which claimed her blood brother, dramatist Philip-Dimitri Galas, in 1986.

With 1990's The Singer, she made her outset elusive advances into the realm of pop music; reprising some of the same creed material which snaked through The Masque of the Red Death, the track record too featured her covers of Willie Dixon's "Insane Asylum" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You." 1993's Vena Cava, an a cappella cause, preceded 1994's The Sporting Life, a collaborationism with previous Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. A track record of Galas' 1994 receiving set work Schrei X followed in 1996, in tandem bicycle with her number one rule book collection, The Shit of God. She returned two years later with Malediction and Prayer.
